"You've got to have freedom to fail if you want any hope of succeeding" (Polson 47).
Background
In his book, Jarrod Polson illustrates that with success, comes failure. In his first few days as a Kentucky Wildcat basketball player, he seems to have no success. He rarely gets any playing time, and when he does, his fear of failing in front of his teammates/coaches causes him to mess up on the simplest of things. A teammate of his that understands what he is going through becomes a sort of mentor to him. This teammate gives him new confidence, which allows him to play freely and do much better than before.
My Views
This idea that success also brings failure can be seen in the world around us. Without taking risks, everything you do will be average and not stand out from others. In order to succeed, you cannot be scared to let others, or yourself down. Losing your fear allows you to try new things, and eventually, one of those things will pay off. When you do fail, look at it as a learning experience rather than a letdown. Even the most talented people fail, like when Michael Jordan once said, "I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." He is believed by many to be the best basketball player to ever play, and even he has constantly failed. He always had the mentality that his next shot would go in, and didn't worry about missing. That is why he has made so many great shots because to him, the reward was greater than the risk.
Quotes on Failure
“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” - Albert Einstein
“Success is that feeling that comes after overcoming a failure, you will not feel it as long as you are not failing, so be proud of your failures, they are the path to your success” - Mina Tadros
“Failure is not fatal. Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. It should challenge us to new heights of accomplishments, not pull us to new depths of despair. From honest failure can come valuable experience.” - William Arthur Ward
“Try and fail, but don't fail to try.” - Stephen Kaggwa
“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” - Henry Ford
